What is USA Climbing and how does the Northern California/Northern Nevada Region fit in?

Do I have to belong to a climbing gym or a team to compete?

No, USA Climbing competitions are open to anyone who pays the event fee and have a USAC Day-Member Pass or Annual Competitor Membership.

A number of climbing gyms in the Northern California/Northern Nevada region have teams that provide coaching and organized practice regimens and many of the team members participate in competitions, but anyone can also register and participate as an "Independent" climber.

What's the difference between a USAC Competitor Membership and a Day-Member Pass?

For first time climbers at Local events, sign up for a Day-Member Pass ($10) for your first competition to try out the competitive climbing scene. If you are planning to climb at a Regional Championship event, get the USAC Annual Competitor Membership ($95)! Both options are only done online.

How are the 3 climbing disciplines different?

Bouldering- season runs from September to February

  • Consists of climbing short, strong problems without a rope
  • Local Competitions- September through November
  • Championship Competitions- Regionals: December; Divisionals: January; Nationals: February

Sport & Speed- season runs concurrently from March-July

  • Sport consists of climbing with ropes for top roping (C & D) and lead climbing (B, A & JR)
  • Speed consists of climbing a specific route on top rope and ranked on how long the climb takes
  • Local Competitions- March through April
  • Championship Competitions- Regionals: May; Divisionals: June; Nationals: July

What are the requirements to compete at a Regional Championship event?
