Climbing Escalade Canada (CEC) has implemented a new policy regarding Foreign Nationals participating in their National Championships. USA Climbing will now be selecting athletes who are eligible to participate at Canadian Nationals based on four quota spots (Open) and two quota spots (Youth). The selection criteria for CEC Open and Youth National Championships can be found below.

U.S. Team Selection Criteria for CEC Nationals

OPEN (4 quota spots)

Interested competitors will submit a letter of interest to USA Climbing (info@usaclimbing.org) by February 10, 2019. Selection Criteria will be with the following priority:

  • 2018-2019 Bouldering Season Ranking
  • 2019 Bouldering National Championship Ranking
  • 2017-2018 Bouldering Season Ranking
  • If a tie exists, priority will be given to the competitor who submitted their letter of interest first.

YOUTH (2 quota spots)

Interested competitors will submit a letter of interest to USA Climbing (info@usaclimbing.org) by January 23, 2019. Selection Criteria will be as follows:

  • 2018 Bouldering Youth National Championship Ranking will be utilized. Only competitors who competed in the 2018 Bouldering Youth National Championship will be considered.
  • If two or more competitor’s express interest and are in the same category this season, but were not in the previous season, the oldest category where the competitor rank was achieved will be given priority. (i.e. Competitor 1 received a rank of 4th place in Youth A as a first year Youth A. Competitor 2 received a rank of 2nd place in Youth B as a second year Youth B. Both competitors are eligible for Youth A at CEC Bouldering Nationals, but Competitor 1 will be given priority as their rank was achieved as a Youth A competitor.)
  • If a tie exists, priority will be given to the competitor who submitted their letter of interest first.

Note: Should the same quotas be applied for Lead and Speed at CEC Open and Youth National Championships for those disciplines, the same processes above will be followed. Deadlines for submission of letters of interest will be announced as information is confirmed by the CEC.

IFSC Executive Board Summary

Like many of you, we have received the IFSC Executive Board Meeting Summary form the December 3-4 Meeting. USA Climbing recognizes the challenges the IFSC is facing in the coming season and applaud many of the suggested actions in the summary. However, we are also concerned with some of the actions proposed. Finally, it is unclear whether the Executive Board is making these decisions unilaterally, or bringing them forward as recommendations to be voted on by the National Federations at the Plenary Assembly in March. As a result, the impact the proposed changes will have on USA Climbing and the athletes is unclear at this time. We will continue to seek additional information and advocate for those items we feel are critical for the coming season and will post updates to our website as we have them.

Climbing Escalade Canada National Championships Participation

It has come to our attention that the Climbing Escalade Canada (CEC) has implemented a new policy regarding Foreign Nationals participating in their National Championships. USA Climbing will now be selecting athletes who are eligible to participate at Canadian Nationals based on four quota spots (Open) and two quota spots (Youth). The selection criteria for the CEC's new policy isn't currently addressed within our rules. As a result, we have initiated the Team Selection Committee to establish the criteria necessary for this selection process. Once the selection criteria is established we will post it to our website as well as send out an announcement via email. Finally, once the criteria is announced we will begin accepting applications of interest from those athletes interested in attending Canadian Nationals.
