USA Climbing is excited to announce and welcome Rachel Owens as the new Collegiate & Paraclimbing Series Manager. Owens will work closely with USA Climbing CEO, Marc Norman, and the existing Collegiate & Paraclimbing Committees to strategically plan and implement actions to significantly advance both series. In this role, Owens will specifically work closely with Colleges, Universities, and the NCAA to understand the NCAA system and the opportunities to expand climbing’s reach within the system with the ultimate goal of becoming a recognized NCAA sport. Within Paraclimbing specifically, she will work to advance, standardize, and significantly grow the series within the United States. By doing so we hope the U.S. can lead the way as the movement works for inclusion in a future Paralympic Games.
“We are very excited to have Rachel join the USA Climbing team,” said Norman. “Collegiate and Paraclimbing are important, fast growing constituencies within our sport and warrant dedicated support and attention. Rachel has an excellent blend of collegiate and NGB experience and we’re confident she’ll be a tremendous asset as we work to implement our strategies for these two important series.”
“The addition of this new staff member shows how important the collegiate series is to USA Climbing,” said JoAnne Carilli-Stevenson, Chair of USA Climbing’s Collegiate Committee. “2020 will be the first year the Collegiate National Championships are televised on ESPN. I look forward to working alongside Rachel, as we continue to grow the series in hopes of one day being a future NCAA sport.”
“The Paraclimbing community is excited to welcome Rachel to our family,” said Maureen Beck, Chair of USA Climbing’s Paraclimbing Committee and Paraclimbing athlete. “Our growing number of competitors will greatly benefit from having someone dedicated to our discipline. Filling this position shows USAC's commitment to supporting all of its disciplines, Paraclimbing included.”
