Salt Lake City, UT, March 12, 2021 - USA Climbing has decided to cancel the 2021 Collegiate Divisional and National Championships due to Covid restrictions across the country.
“While conditions are improving across the country significant risks remain and with many colleges and universities limiting club sport participation it became increasingly clear that hosting Divisional and National level Collegiate competitions was simply not feasible,” said Marc Norman, USA Climbing CEO. “Athlete safety is our highest priority.”
USA Climbing consulted with Collegiate student leaders, Divisional Coordinators, and the Collegiate Committee, the decision to cancel the competition was deemed the best course of action. The Collegiate Virtual Qualifying Series presented by KAYA will be extended through April 25th, 2021 to provide collegiate competitors the opportunity to continue their season in their local area.
“This was an extremely hard decision to cancel our Collegiate National Championships for the second year in a row and further highlights the significant impact that this pandemic has had on collegiate athletes,” said JoAnne Carilli-Stevenson, Chair of USA Climbing’s Collegiate Committee. “While we know is it disappointing for our collegiate climbers, we also know that nothing can damper their enthusiasm, dedication, and passion for this sport. Our 2022 National Championships is going to be an incredible event.”
