Sport Climbing Provisionally Included in the Paris 2024 Olympic Sports Program

On July 24th, 2019, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) unanimously voted on the provisional inclusion of Sport Climbing along with three other sports-- Break Dancing, Skateboarding, and Surfing to the Paris 2024 Olympic Program. The inclusion of the four sports was strongly endorsed by the IOC Executive Session in their most recent meeting on March 27, 2019.

The proposal would increase the number of climbers from 40 in 2020 to 72 in 2024. One of the major changes from the format of the Tokyo 2020 Games is the separation of speed climbing as its own event. Bouldering and lead climbing would remain a combined event.

Observation and analysis of three of the sports will take place at the 2020 Olympic Games with representatives from the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee and the IOC's Olympic Program Commission. The IOC Executive Board will make the final decision on the proposed new events and related athlete quotas for the 2024 Olympic Games in December 2020.
