Earlier this week, the IOC upheld a recommendation by the Olympic Programme Commission for the inclusion of four new sports in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The four sports--break dancing, skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing, will be voted on by the IOC at the IOC Session in Lausanne, Switzerland on June 24th. If approved at the IOC Session, the number of quota spots and event program will be finalized at the IOC Executive Board Meeting in December 2020.
For sport climbing, the proposal differs from what fans can expect to see at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan. In Tokyo, athletes must participate in all three disciplines of climbing--speed, lead, and bouldering. For Paris, the format separates the competition into two events: speed climbing and lead/bouldering. The new proposal also expands the event from 40 athletes in 2020 and 72 in the 2024 and bring the total number of medals awarded up to 12.
